The Trivial Pursuit of Recycleness

The other day we stumbled into the Chatham Village Cafe for our usual afternoon refill of french roast (poured into our re-usable aluminum travel mugs, of course) and we did what we always do first: we checked out their blackboard for the trivia question of the day. Today we were being asked who the three members of the '60s group 'The Cream' were. We got Clapton and Baker, but the other guy, we ddn't have a clue.

But it got us thinking: There HAS to be some really bizarre, fascinating and, yes, alarming facts on our favorite subject -- recycling! So we did a little digging, and we weren't disappointed.

We decided to share these facts with Chatham Recycles readers -- but to frame the info as a quiz. You provide the guesses, we provide the answers at ChathamRecycles.org/quiz.

Sound fun? Let's begin:

Recycling a single run of the Sunday New York Times would save how many trees?
a: 900, b: 4,000 or c: 75,000?

How many plastic bottles do Americans throw away every hour?
a: 3,000,000, b: 25,000,000, c: 32,000,000?

How many styrofoam coffee cups do Americans throw away every year?
a: 6,000,000,000, b: 12,000,000,000, c: 25,000,000,000?

The energy saved from recycling one glass bottle can run a 100-watt light bulb for how long?
a: 10 minutes, b: one hour, c: four hours?

The United States generates what percentage of the world's total waste?
a: 25%, b: 33%, c: 40%?

See how well you did! The answers are at ChathamRecycles.org/quiz
