Mission Statement:

Chatham Recycles is a volunteer-driven educational program designed to encourage residents, visitors and businesses to reduce their trash output and increase their recycling efforts. By recycling, Chathamites can limit the amount of trash going into incinerators and landfills, help conserve natural resources and contribute to Chatham's reputation as a forward-thinking and environmentally conscious community.

LET'S WORK TO SET THE STANDARD!

Every calendar year the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) calculates statewide recycling rates. Calculations are based on data supplied to MassDEP by each town within the Commonwealth.

A historical listing of municipal recycling rates and documentation of how MassDEP calculates the residential recycling rates is posted
here.

Chatham posted its most robust recycling figures in 1999, with a recycling rate of 44%. Unfortunately, Chatham has not experienced this level of excellence since. We believe Chathamites should strive to portray an upward trend with their recycling efforts, each year increasing our recycling rate a little more than the year before.  Through public education and hard work this goal is attainable; however, it all depends on you.  By making some small lifestyle changes we can all participate in improving our community's well being and watch Chatham's recycling rate climb each year and surpass our 1999 record.
