SUCCESS STORIES
Last Updated:

Recycling Success Stories within the Town of Chatham come in all shapes, sizes and angles.

We will be adding more of them as we continue to build ChathamRecycles.org.

In the meantime, here are a few:

A Significant Drop

"As Town of Chatham employees, not a day goes by that we don't throw paper (and lots of it) into the trash. But since the Town has hired a private rubbish hauler to take away white paper, for recycling, we have reduced our paper waste significantly!  In the Town Annex offices employees are in the habit of disposing of "wasted" white office paper in the provided recycling container and it's now a habit!  We are working on getting our staff to recycle just about everything we can. Since most of us are here from early morning until the evenings there are always food containers and beverage containers that can be displaced from the waste stream into the now permanent recycling bins in our staff room. And wow are they filling up fast.  Staff takes turns getting the stuff to the recycling center, and we are saving the Town money, and helping to protect the environment! Kudos to everyone committed to recycling!"

Carpenter Recycles Movie Set

"Everyone recalls how the town was taken over by a film crew shooting the movie 'Chatham' in the Spring of 2007. In one scene, the script called for a home to be set on fire, so the production company built a Cape Cod-style facade behind Chatham Hardware. It was really nothing more than 2x4's and cedar planking sheathed over metal scaffolding. The building was burned and filmed in the wee hours of a Saturday and then the wood was to be hauled off to the Transfer Station. The thing was, most of the wood was fine and could be used again. The following Monday morning I walked by and saw a local carpenter loading long planks of cedar into his truck from the location. He said it was perfectly fine wood and he thought it would be a crime to waste it -- so he was going to recycle it. He wasn't sure exactly where he'd use the planks, but they would be used on some job along the way. So, here you have one little enterprising carpenter getting some free wood that would otherwise be wasted -- and a film set from the movie 'Chatham' gets successfully recycled!"

ENCOUNTERS AT THE RECYCLING CENTER:

"My friend Nancy Maglione , Finance Director for Amherst for 18 years, visited last week.  I took her to "the dump" to show her what an outstanding facility Chatham has.  She loved it -- the recycling and how accessible it is. It's all good! Chatham has a rocking landfill/transfer station. Your recycle facility is a model! Quite remarkable. "

"As a longtime recycler, I'm very happy that we can now bring all the plastics, as well as mixed paper. I feel we now have a complete recycling center!"

-Oonie Burley

"Until two weeks ago, I didn't really recycle. Then my girlfriend guilted me into doing it. It makes me feel less guilty!"

-Peter Twombly

"This is the best recycling center in the world! It's so organized and so neat, and everyone is so friendly!"
