Aviation History Month Continues

Chatham became an important part of aviation history on May 9, 1919 when a large seaplane, known as the NC-4, taxied into the Chatham Naval Air Station after landing at sea some 80 miles offshore due to fuel pump failure.

The Naval aircraft piloted by Lt. Elmer Stone, USCG, was one of three flying boats to take off from the Naval Air Station in Rockaway, NY on May 3, 1919 on the first leg of the their flight to Halifax, Nova Scotia in their attempt be the first to fly across the Atlantic.

The NC-4 was repaired and left Chatham on May 14, 1919. Once the reunited with the NC-1 and NC-3, the three planes left Newfoundland on May 15th and headed for the Azores, the longest leg of the crossing at 1,200 miles. The NC-1 and NC-3 were forced down by bad weather – the crew of the NC-1 was rescued by a Greek freighter and the crew of NC-3 taxied 205 miles through high winds and seas to the Azores. Only the NC-4 successfully reached the Azores by flight and completed the first trans-Atlantic crossing on 27 May 1919, when it entered the harbor in Lisbon, Portugal.

The crossing was commemorated in an event at Chatham Municipal Airport in the 1980’s and at the site of the Chatham Naval Air Station on its 100th anniversary.

The Mainsheet

The name of our e-newsletter was selected from submissions by our community.
In nautical terms a mainsheet is the line connected to the boom which allows a sailor to control the speed of a boat. We think that is fitting for an e-newsletter that can be used to quickly send out important information to our community or at a more leisurely rate for less pressing matters. It reflects Chatham’s maritime history, is reminiscent of the front page of a newspaper, and it is a fun play on Main Street, where you go to be part of all that is happening in Town!
